A breed traditionally associated with hand stripping is not automatically a suitable candidate for hand stripping throughout its entire life. Coat texture and condition can change, including following neutering, previous clipping or simply with age.

Our approach is to assess the coat in front of us rather than follow a rule because a breed is ‘supposed’ to be stripped. If hand stripping is suitable, we can discuss it. If another grooming method would be kinder or more appropriate, we will explain why and help you choose the best way forward.

One of the best things you can do for a puppy who will need regular grooming throughout life is introduce the process early. Once vaccinations are complete and your vet is happy for your puppy to attend, early grooming visits can help them become familiar with handling, the grooming table, brushing, combing, dryers, feet being touched and the sounds and sensations of a salon environment.

Waiting until a dog is heavily coated, matted or much older can make their first experience unnecessarily difficult. Grooming is a life skill, particularly for breeds and crosses whose coats require frequent maintenance.

Popular poodle crosses can have wonderfully soft, fluffy coats, but that coat can require significant maintenance. Brushing only across the surface may leave tangles and matting close to the skin where they are difficult to see. We can help owners understand how to line brush and comb properly between appointments, including which tools are appropriate for their dog’s coat.

Regular professional grooming combined with effective home maintenance gives you far more choice over style and length. When matting becomes tight to the skin, welfare must come before preserving coat length.

 

A Calm Approach to Nervous Dogs

Owners sometimes tell us their dog shakes when they arrive and worry that this means their dog is unhappy with us. Dogs can react to anticipation, excitement and the moment of separation from their owner in many different ways. We often see a complete change once the owner has left, with dogs settling and offering affection very quickly.

We will always be truthful about how your dog copes. If something concerns us, we will tell you. Equally, we are happy to reassure you when the behaviour we see after you leave is very different from the worried goodbye you may have witnessed.

 

Nails Are Part of the Groom

Nail checking is included as part of a full grooming appointment. If nails need attention and it is appropriate and safe to do so, they will be addressed as part of the groom. If you are ever unsure what is included in your dog’s appointment, please ask. We would much rather you feel completely clear and confident about the service your dog is receiving.
